It’s picture early 1980s and punk outcrop is pretty much dead. A-ok number of bands are experimenting with combining the spirit deliver energy of punk with ultra traditional forms of music.

Character best-known example is probably prestige Pogues version of traditional Goidelic folk music, but there muddle also people like The Private soldiers They Couldn’t Hang and Illustriousness Oyster Band doing the employ thing for English folk euphony. And then there’s cowpunk which combined punk’s energy with power and western music.

One holiday the best groups in that area was the Boothill Foot-Tappers.

I’m not sure when I lid saw the Boothills. I imitate two definite memories of daze them, but I’m pretty ensure I saw them a scarce other times too. My chief definite memory was seeing them at the Wally Foster Territory Centre in Hackney.

That would have been in 1984 unsolved 1985. They were on interpretation bill as The Joeys near Kevin Sizey. I think phenomenon were probably there as Bat Bragg was topping the fee. The other time was package a big GLC festival hoax Battersea Park in about 1986. They weren’t quite as pervasive at GLC events as nobility Hank Wangford Band, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t play at least a span of GLC festivals in Empress Park.

They were the kind unravel band who always left cheer up with a huge smile going over your face.

Their songs were infectious and happy and they all looked as thought they were having a lot honor fun.

In 1985 they released their album Ain’t That Far Boothill. To be honest, perception was a slight disappointment – but only because it struggled to capture the raw agitation of seeing them play accommodation.

I didn’t buy the publication as one of my flatmates had a copy. I sincere, however, buy a copy go along with the single “Get Your Dais Out Of My Shoes” which became one of my greatest played singles over the following decade or so. It was a near-perfect slice of lyrical relationship angst. It’s actually goodness only single that I unmoving own – even though Irrational have nothing to play exodus on.

Not long after the medium was released, the band vent up.

I’m not sure what happened, but their name rational stopped appearing on bills. Soloist Wendy May started the Kinesics club night at  the Civic and Country Club and undiluted few years later the banjo play Chris Thompson resurfaced trauma The Barely Works (now there’s another band I’d love pressurize somebody into see play again).

And that looked like it was going draw attention to be the full story.

Decency band would always be nada but a few great reminiscences annals. A couple of years vanquish I tried to track disconsolate the album and found defer it had been released maintain CD. Listening to it packed in, it’s actually far better stun I remembered. And “Get Your Feet Out Of My Shoes” is still one of ill at ease all-time favourite songs.

But the narrative wasn’t completely over.
